- Funerals in Islam (called Janazah in Arabic) follow fairly specific rituals, though they are subject to regional interpretation and variation in custom. In all cases, however, Sharia (Islamic religious law) calls for burial of the body, preceded by a simple ritual involving bathing and shrouding the body, followed by Janazah salah (prayer).
- Dundee Islamic Society has assigned the responsibilities of above mentioned arrangements to the Funeral Services therefore if you have any query in this regard please contact them from our contact page.
- Dundee Islamic Society has a mortuary room behind the mosque where the corpse is washed (ghusl/bathed), equipment and coffin sheets are provided for Ghusl.
- Janazah prayer is performed after the ghusl and the body buried in the allocated spaces for the Muslim community in the local grave yards.
Actions to be taken directly after Death
- The eyes of the deceased should be closed gently.
Imam Muslim narrates this is what the Prophet did to Abu Salamah(r.a) when he passed away in front of him,he is also reported to have prayed for him after closing his eyes.
The person closing the eyes should say:
Bismillahi wa billahi wa ala millati rasullillah
In the name of Allah and with His aid and on the religion of the Messenger of Allah”
(Al-Hakim). - The mouth should be closed and a strip of cotton placed under the chin and around the head tying it firmly at the top to ensure the mouth remains closed.
- The limbs are straightened carefully and gently if possible.
- No hair or nails should be removed from the body.
- The ankles can be bound together.
- If possible any jewellery such as rings, necklaces, bracelets and Nose studs should be removed.
(Once swelling occurs this will not be possible). - The body should remain covered by a clean sheet until the time of washing.
- It is disliked (makrooh)to read Quran next to the body due the probability of impurity.
However, normal supplication (dua) is permitted.
Anyone who receives news of the death of a Muslim should read:
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon
“To Allah do we belong and to Him shall we return.” (2:156)
Those extremely overcome with grief can read:
Allahuma’jurni fi musibati wakhluf likhayran minha
“O Allah! Reward me in my affliction and requite me with (something) better than this”
(Muslim).
The funeral and burial of a person should not be delayed.
Delays should not be made in order for relatives from abroad to be able to attend the funeral.
It is imperative to prioritise the interests of the dead person over everyone else.
“Hasten with the janazah, for if it is a good one, bliss is awaiting it, and if it is otherwise, you will be quicker in discharging the burden” (Bukhari, Muslim).
